About Mackinac Island and Places to Visit
Mackinac Island is an island in Lake Huron, on the eastern side of Straits of Mackinac, which separates Upper and Lower Peninsulas, Michigan. Mackinac covers an area of approximately 9.8 square kilometers; the coast is about 13 kilometers long. The island can be reached by ferry, private boat, or airplane; there are also snowmobiles in winter. Snowmobiles are the only motorized vehicles allowed on the island, and all other such vehicles have been prohibited on Makino since 1898. Skateboards and roller skates are also permitted, as is the use of bicycles or horse-drawn carts.
In the late 19th century, Makino Island became incredibly popular with tourists. Makino is now listed as a National Historic Landmark. The island is known for its cultural events, wide range of architectural styles, and ban on almost all motor vehicles. The state protects over 80% of the island as Mackinac Island State Park. There are many pastry shops and restaurants in the city center, and the island’s Mackinac Island Fudge, which is known throughout the country, is particularly popular with tourists.
Mackinac Island Airport (MCD) is the main airport of the island, located one nautical mile from the center of Makino.
