About Preakness Stakes
May 20th 2017 marks the 142nd running of the world famous Preakness Stakes. Since its inception in 1873 the Preakness Stakes has been one of the most important American thoroughbred races. Following two weeks after the Kentucky Derby and being 3 weeks prior to the Belmont Stakes, its is often referred to as “The Second Jewel of the Triple Crown”.
The race consists of a 9.5 furlong (1 3/16 mi) left-handed dirt track run by both colts and fillies. The recorded holder since 1973 has been the famous racehorse Secretariat who reached worldwide fame in 2010 though the live action film of the same name.
Where the Kentucky Derby typically has a more formal and restrained setting, the Preakness Stakes has always had what some describe as party atmosphere. As the Kentucky Derby has their signature cocktail, the Mint Julep, so does the Preakness Stakes with their Black-eyed Susan. The cocktail is named after the other name for the Preakness, “The Run for the Black-Eyed Susans”, and consists of vodka, St. Germain liqueur and pineapple, lime, and orange juices.
As the event attracts nearly 100,000 spectators each year many are choosing to charter a private flight to avoid the crowds. You can begin the festivities early by sipping on cocktail and relaxing in the comfort of you own private jet.
