Discover Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve
Leisure travelers who want to discover Alaska in its purest form will enjoy visiting Glacier Bay National Park. The massive park encompasses more than 3.2 million acres.
Throughout your visit to Glacier Bay National Park, you’ll see countless waterfalls glisten in the sunlight, glaciers and white snowcapped mountain peaks. Points of interest in the park include:
Bartlett Cove
Bartlett Cove in Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve Visitor’s Center and Lodge is a great place to start your tour. The water is a deep emerald green in the cove. Although it rains frequently during Alaska’s summer months, you can explore in comfort with rain gear. Boots are part of everyday attire in Alaska. A pleasant walk along the trails of the park will reveal the diversity of plant life in this rainforest ecosystem. Just away from the dock, the seascape is dotted with playful sea otters floating on kelp patches. Whale spouts can be seen throughout the park.
South Marble Island
It’s easy to imagine the excitement of famed Naturalist John Muir when he first stepped foot in this area in 1879 because of its abundant wildlife. South Marble Island is a limestone outcrop in the park where you can spot a diversity of wildlife including Steller Sea Lions, pigeon guillemots, cormorants, sea otters, and colorful Tufted Puffins.
Reid Glacier
With an exploration of Reid Glacier and the rocky shoreline it left behind, it becomes clear the important role glaciers play in shaping Alaska’s iconic rugged landscape. On the beach at the foot of the glacier, you can spot bear tracks in the sand and Black Oystercatchers on the shoreline feasting on abundant blue oysters and patches of Nootka Lupine on distant mountainsides.
Margerie Glacier
Margerie Glacier is a 21-mile long tidewater glacier famous for its spectacular calving displays. Referred to as “White Thunder”, calving is the result of ice splitting from the face of the glacier and crashing into the water. Rising high above the water, the glacier’s jagged architecture resembles the shape of crystals reaching into the Alaskan sky. Standing face to face with one of the most powerful engines of nature is an awe-inspiring site. While visiting the glacier, look out for sea lions that are often spotted frolicking amongst the mini icebergs created by calving.
Tracy Arm Fjord
Tracy Arm is a glacial fjord with stunning waterfalls, icebergs and towering cliffs that rise high above the river valley. The glaciers of this region branch off the 500 square-mile Stikine Icefield, where snowfall often exceeds 100 feet per year. As snow builds in this accumulation zone, the resulting ice begins to overflow into the valleys, forming glaciers that Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve is world-famous for.
