Iceland – one of the most popular destinations at the moment – has a typical Arctic climate. This means that the winters are long and dark and the summers are short and bright. Both seasons, however, make a great experience. Winter being a great time to do some great skiing and watching the Northern Lights, and the summer is all about exploring the outdoors.
Enjoy Iceland’s Natural Wonders
While most people visit Reykjavik, there are other great cities to discover as well. One of these is Akureyri (the largest outside of the capital) and a great travel destination for a laid-back experience about all the natural wonders that Iceland has to offer.
The country is home to some of the best outdoor adventures possible. From hiking to kayaking and exploring the waterfalls, there is something amazing everywhere you look. One adventure worth doing is going on a boat to whale watch. There you can get up and close to all the whales and the mountains.
Throughout the city, you can also schedule some “me” time at one of the spas or hot springs in Akureyri. If you take a trip to Lake Myvatn, you can also encounter some of the best natural baths in the city. For something different, you can take a trip to Bjorbodin, a beer spa that allows you to immerse yourself in some Icelandic beer.
Despite being the second largest city in Iceland, Akureyri is actually home to only about 18,000 people. That being said, it is a great and charming place to explore. One great attraction that is definitely worth a visit is the Lystigarour Akureyri Botanical Garden, where you can see Arctic flora that doesn’t exist anywhere else in the world.
Lastly, in addition to Reykjavik, Akureyri is one of the best places to see the Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis. The best time to do this is visiting between September and April when the weather is clear and you can drive out to a spot with some warm blankets and hot cocoa for a truly unforgettable experience with your loved one.
